Why the Book Series?

Adventures of One Sock by Roy Ruiz
I’ve always been a story teller by nature, I love reading to my kids but mostly making up stories to entertain them as well. It seemed only natural that I would turn that into a children’s book for my son. He’s 6 and at the age of 3 we were told that he had Autism, it hasn’t always been a easy road but writing about him has made it easier for me as a father. When I decided to turn it into a published series I let Racer pick the artist he liked best, he was and has been part of the entire process since the start, its been a great bonding experience to say the least.
My first book is called Adventures of One Sock "The Lion" . I have also recently started a kickstarter account to help me fund the rest of the series.  I’m hoping to raise awareness for Autism and for my son through this series, through some of the light-hearted adventures that my son and family have found ourselves in.  The kickstarter account can be found at:

"Another Book Review!"

I read this book with my granddaughters, ages five and six. They both love the name "Racer" and how a walk to school turned into a mysterious adventure. I used the book to start discussions on new experiences and fears. I highly recommend "Adventures Of One Sock"

"Why I Wrote my Children's Book"

Many people ask me this all the time. If you follow me on twitter then you know that my other tag name is "Securityfiles" and that I'm writing a book about my old job running a security team for movie sets for the past 15 years. Now that book is a little more adultish than my latest "Adventures of One Sock". I've always wanted to writes a book aimed at children, I'm that guy who would wake up every Saturday morning to watch the whole cartoon line up til around noon.

(Of course they don't have cartoons on that late anymore, since our children should be out exercising rather than stay inside watching toons)

Now this is also before they have Nick and Cartoon network where you can watch cartoons 24/7. So for years I've made little books about our cats we had (which we had tons of) but as years went by I was never able to find that niche. Even after having kids I still wanted to do a children's book, but wasn't too sure on the angle. I always written short stories but mostly about horror or creatures that go bump in the dark. Then when I started my security job working on film sets, I was able to teach myself  how to write scripts from reading every script left on the floor or movies that I worked on.

(You can always find a copy of the script in the script supervisor's chair)

Working this one location "Ambassador Hotel" I came up with a cartoon idea, but as I got more into the story I turned the humor into a Family guy type series. The name of the cartoon series is called "Pet Palace" I recieved many good laughs and feedback from it. (still hoping to get sold)  I figured hey here's my cartoon I always wanted to do, but the only problem is that it wasn't aimed for every kid.

Then the year came when we were told our Son was diagnosed with Autism. Of course I had no clue what that was, other than it explaining why he was behind in his speech and words and being social. Of course many of you parents out there know the frustrations and no sleep at night dealing with your children who have special needs. That's when I started reading many parents stories about their children and their hardship. I can relate to many stories, and that's when I thought wait. Why Don't I write about my son's journey and adventures with Autism, but in a lighter note.

(Now since the book has been released I've been told my book isn't autism enough. Also been told that I sold out the Autism community. This is my vision, and I wanted a book based off my son's life with autism but write it so every child or adult who's a child at heart can enjoy. I've also recieved many great thanks and applause for doing a great job)

I feel from all the thing's our son has put us through as a family I can  only look back and laugh. I'm sure many parents out there feel the same. Now I wasn't going to get this book out there til after my Security book came out. But after a situation where our landlord sold the house we were renting from with out telling us, living at our house became very stressful. From a stepson who caused damage among the kids and house and continuesly lied to neighbors and teachers to finding a place to live and a place for our dog. Everything was happening way too fast and not enough money to get the things we needed done. So I rolled the dice and made a decision, and spent the money we don't have and pay for an artist and editor and get 'Adventures of One Sock" out there. The next step was to let the stepson leave to his dad's, since that's where he wanted to live. One he was gone I put my concentration on making the rest of the kids happy.

So I came up with stories, found myself a great Artist (Valerie Bouthyette) a great Editor (Julie Rodriguez) and with the help of my girl came up with the title "Adventures of One Sock". Now for those who asked why "One Sock?" Well because my son "Racer" walks around the house with just One Sock. I kid you not.

The process wasn't as easy as the Create Space said it was but after many fixes, our book arrived and on the same date as my son's (Racer) birthday. When the kids seen the book arrive at the house, they were over joyed once again, and this really made me smile cause they were smiling and once again happy. My oldest daughter came over to me and told me that even though we might be homeless you proved that we still have a chance  and that it wasn't so bad moving anymore. After reading it to my son and my kids, I found they loved the book and still read it even tho the book is only 24 pages long, the still continue reading the book.

Even if the book doesn't become a best seller, it will always be to my kids and myself since this book raised their spirits up once again and it's great to see everyone happy and smiling once again. I'm really happy that Racer loves the book since it is about his Adventures:)

"My Second Book Review"

I must say that this kiddy book entertained me! Racer's character is so sweet and innocent that it makes u feel warm hearted. All three of my kids read it and enjoyed it, it even made my 15 yr old son giggle! All the characters were delightful especially Racer's Dad who was there for him till the end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has young children. My kids and I are looking forward to Racer's next adventure.

First Book Review!

This is the story of Racer. He is a young boy with a creative imagination. I really enjoyed the story and thought that it was very heartfelt. I felt like  I understood how he felt when I was reading it. I pictured my kids doing the same thing. My children liked it too and I would love to see more of these books for my kids to read. It is well written and fun to read. It made me laugh when he was telling everyone about what happen. The characters were good. My favorite character was Racer. This book has a lot of charm and I'm sure I will read it with my children many more times in the future.

Book/School Update!

What a busy week, the kids finally stated school again, and it took a while for them to get back to their sleeping schedules but after a few days i think they're finally there. I hae to admit I was nervous about racer being in 1st grade, he's now at school all day long. My first concern was bullies but hopefully being in a big family with brothers and sisters he will be able to manage it. This week was not just school for everyone but also racer's Birthday and also his book release which came out the same day as his birthday. Isn't that Ironic. So I talked with the principal for the kids school and will be donating a couple of books to their library, and another for the Special needs class. The Principal also wants to send a book over to another school for their special education class. September is also their book fair and they want to highlight "Adventures of One Sock" in the event so the other students can see that their fellow student (racer) is a character in a book.

Just hoping racer doesn't get shy or bothered with the attention.

Don't forget to follow the "Adventures of one Sock" here on blogger and you can also now purchase your copy of the book over at https://www.createspace.com/3673430  great story for your kids and people who are just a kid in heart. The book is now available on Amazon too! Enjoy:)

A Day At the Beach ~ Surfers Healing

Yesterday was Surfers Healing, in a word it was amazing.

Surfers Healing is a non-profit group, they take children with autism out and surf with them. But its so much more then that, the feeling that comes over you to be in one spot surrounded by so many other families who are dealing with the same thing you are. Its surreal, no judgement, no looks, no snide comments from people who have no clue while your child melts down in the corner. Here is more about them and what they do.

I really have to say I was nervous, I wasn't sure what to expect or how Racer would handle it. But when we got there I felt at ease, Racer was anxious to surf but handled the wait well. He got fitted for a wetsuit and a life jacket. Then waited his turn.....and to my surprise he went out there with no fuss, jumped on the board and off he went. I have to admit it was hard standing on the shore watching him go past the break and jump into the ocean and swim for a bit. Then to get back on the board and come in on a wave, by that time I was crying (thank gravy for big dark sunglasses). He caught 3 big waves before he came back in and he was all smiles, well Racer smiles lol. It was awesome and I can't wait till we do it again!!!

Every time I see this video I get the chills, this will be remembered forever!

My Haircut

Tomorrow I'm off to get a haircut with my mom. Then I'm taking pictures for the artist who is drawing me for my book. Mom promises that they won't use the clippers, she knows how much I hate them. Only scissors  and the ladies there are really nice to me. She also told me that I can get the shark fin haircut!
